cgi script won't open initial file

by Daddio, Florian, last edit on Fri Jun 15 13:28:56 2007

Hi there - I've installed everything and CHMODed appopriately. buildingblock.cgi will simply not open. Getting an HTTP 500 Error code ("page cannot be displayed")

Hi Daddio, please first have a look at http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/web/perl_scripts.html and try the steps explained there. At the bottom of that page there is a script "test.cgi" available for download. You might want to use that to test whether Perl CGI is working at all. Best regards, Florian Berger

Stuck at "add entry"

by Ian Harding, Florian, last edit on Fri Jun 15 13:32:41 2007

I've managed to get the buildingblock.cgi to work and now I'm trying to follow the guides and example. I've got a simple page up and have tried to submit an entry, but when I hit the "submit" button I get an error message saying that buildingblock.cgi doesn't exist on my server. I seem to be stuck - any ideas?

Hi Ian, sorry for the delay. Could you post the URI of your site? If it uses an unusual place for the CGI directory, the default settings of Building Block may fail. I'll have a look, just post the URI. --Florian Berger

SSI and .shtml tip!

by Marco-Paul Breijer, Florian, last edit on Fri Jun 15 13:34:14 2007

Make a .htaccess file containing: AddType text/x-server-parsed-html .html Put it in your public_html or www and now you can use .html instead of .shtml Looks better! Keep on going with the good (Perl)work Florian! Greetings from the Netherlands. I will mail you the Dutch translation when I am finished. Great Sylvester everybody! MP

Hi Marco, thanks a lot for the hint. I'll include it in the documentation once I find some time. :) If you need help with the translation (on how to handle the messy message string hash), just drop me a mail. If you are already using Building Block, I'd be glad to receive an URI of your site. Best regards, Florian

Image directory

by Hasanuddin Tamir, last edit on Fri Jun 15 13:35:03 2007

Hi, I usually organize images in a separate directory under the root, for example 'images'. This way I can actually put images anywhere in the file system and create symlink to the ROOTDIR/images. Or, setup an alias directive in apache conf file to point to the actual image directory. I look at the source code but all I see is the path to the images (as used in IMG SRC) is hardcoded (forcibly) to the ROOTDIR instead of some configurable image directory. Could you please suggest some solution? If this is not something principal, and the images path mechanism can be changed, are you taking a voluntary offer to do the change? Thanks!
